Public sector

The public sector is the catch all term for a vast range of careers and jobs in central and local government and frontline services, such as nurse or in a jobcentre.

The scale and range of careers in public service is broad. You may be aware of many such as nursing, being a doctor, paramedic or working in adult social care, through to being a police officer, a teacher or a social worker.

Desirable skills

For many roles, experience or qualifications will be required, though it’s important to bear in mind that for some public sector jobs, most require a can do attitude and transferrable skills. Good communication skills, problem solving and flexibility, computer skills, being organised and be able to work at speed are all key attributes for a role in the public sector.
