No work experience? Focus on what you do have

  • It can be hard to know how to write a CV with little or no work experience, but everyone has experience.
  • There are many skills that you’ll have developed outside the workplace, for example, through volunteering, hobbies, caring or community activities.
  • These could include ‘transferable’ skills that most employers would value, such as team working, communication, adaptability and time management.
  • List your achievements on your CV – even though you may not have much work experience, a list of other achievements shows that you are an effective person with something to offer.
  • Use a ‘hobbies and interests’ section in your CV to demonstrate skills or experience relevant to the role you’re applying for.
  • The National Careers Service has a Skills Assessment (external website) tool that can help you spot your talents.
  • Further information can be found on our Quick guide to work experience page.
