Finding job vacancies

Finding job opportunities and vacancies – 10 top tips

  • There are loads of online job sites. Try searching online for ‘jobs’ or make your search more specific to find the right vacancies for you, like ‘hospitality jobs in Manchester’.
  • Try Find a Job (external website). As well as having thousands of vacancies, you can create a profile, upload your CV and get email alerts about new opportunities.
  • Search for ‘entry level jobs’ on job sites if you want to build up your experience.
  • Many companies use social media to recruit. Follow the ones you’re interested in.
  • Network – if you’re able to, reach out to people you know who might be able to help, for example, a teacher or college tutor. Friends and family can also often be a valuable source of intel and support.
  • Look out for local careers and jobs fairs – they’re a great place to meet employers and build up your contacts.
  • Sometimes employers use fancy-sounding job titles. Don’t be put off – check the job description to see what it’s all about.
  • Using AI can help your job search by finding vacancies that match your skills and experience. But it can’t do everything. Make sure you explore different things to find what suits you.
  • If you’re thinking about starting your own business, you can get advice from Youth Employment UK and The King’s Trust. There’s also guidance on business.gov.uk.
  • If you’d like further help and advice, our ‘Personal support’ page lays out some options.
