Dionne took a career pause for two years, after leaving her job as a social worker in London and relocating to Merseyside. This time out allowed her to think about how she could best use her skills.

Now, Dionne works in end-of-life care as a ‘soul midwife’, making people comfortable. “Being with a person at the end of their life requires sensitivity, and sometimes means being still and silent, which is not as easy as it sounds,” says Dionne.

Dionne’s late mum was her role model – she was a medical secretary who worked well into her 70s. “I think 50 is the new 40, so why not look at what you really want to do at any age?” says Dionne, and she adds: “Changing careers can help you establish a sense of purpose in later life, so embrace happiness, play to your strengths and cultivate a positive attitude”.
