Making your employment history work for you

  • List your experience with the most recent first. You could also give an indication of how long you were in each job, especially if a previous job is directly relevant to the one you’re applying for.
  • Deciding on how much career history to include on your CV can be challenging. Remember that quality is better than quantity.
  • It’s OK to leave out the details of jobs that are less crucial to the role you’re applying for, and to highlight just the most relevant experiences and skills from a long list of previous jobs.
  • If you’ve included dates of employment in your history, explain any employment gaps. Most people have been out of work at some time, so briefly explain and point to any transferable or life skills you gained.
