Paula Fisher shares her story of returning to work after an unexpected redundancy at 61.
Paula from Porthcawl, South Wales, was made redundant in February 2020 from her role of finance officer at a charity. “I loved my job. I never thought I’d need to find another one, I thought I’d be there until retirement.” When lockdown hit the following month, Paula realised she couldn’t have been out of work at a worse time.
Paula soon realised that although she had plenty of experience, she needed to expand her skill set to get noticed by potential employers. “I phoned the Jobcentre in Porthcawl to ask about training. They put me in touch with Careers Wales who were fantastic”.
After a couple of temporary jobs, Paula successfully applied in February 2021 for her current finance assistant role with Cardiff-based charity Tempo Time Credits and she says: “Even when you’ve got good qualifications and experience, there are always gaps in your CV. I tried to fill every gap I could, and tick every box, so I knew I had what employers were looking for and now I’m in a job I absolutely adore.”
