Speaker 1: Are you looking for work and thinking about trying something new? Working in farming, you will make a real difference to people's lives every day. Here's how Joe made his move to being a farmer. Joe: Hi, I'm Joe and I work in farming, specifically potatoes, and I'm based in Yorkshire. Before I was working in farming, I was a retail operations manager in a bike shop. Joe: What made me consider working in farming was the opportunity to learn new skills in a trade. I like being outside and it was an opportunity to be practical as well. Joe: I'm a fieldsman for a potato packer, supplier, and grower. Day to day, that means that I do everything from supplying seed, observing the crop in the ground, monitoring it in the store, and then buying and supplying it into the pack house and multiple crispers as well. Joe: My preconceptions for going into farming were that it would be dirty mucky work. But actually, we spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on these tractors now, and they're actually quite comfortable. Joe: There are multiple transferable skills. IT skills are now fundamental to any farming business. But you also spend all of time on your own, so time management and communication as well. Joe: Since working in farming, I've completed multiple courses, quad bike courses, spraying courses, chainsaw courses. And they're all useful skills to have. Joe: Working in farming is a really fulfilling role. You're helping people three times a day. Every time someone sits down to eat, you are putting that on their plate. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.
